Since 2012 my visual research deals with gender and identity issues, mainly exploring the notion of female masculinity (Maschilità XX) and the experience of transitioning from one gender to the opposite (Orlando: the-origin, photographic project, 2015; Orlando: in-between, video-installation 2016; Orlando: not-framed, photographic project, 2016). In the approach to these issues I take my own personal experience as a starting point and the Queer studies as the theoretical background. In this exploration I adopt a psychological and cultural perspective. Therefore, I’m not interested in representing the physical and aesthetical changes of the transitioning body, but in dealing with the psychological dynamics and with the cultural and social questions that one has to face while proceeding with the transition process. In my artistic work I look for a more fluid notion of gender and, in the end, I want to question if we really need the notion of gender to define and build our identities. I am my name is the fourth of a series of works inspired both by my transition process and by Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. A biography (regarded as the first novel questioning the notion of gender). This new work takes into account the issue of the name as a sign of identity. Identity is something complex, hanging on individual feelings on one side and on society definitions on the other side. This tension is particular strong and painful when it comes to the issue of what is our “first name”: the one we feel and choose for ourselves or the one it was given to them when we were born?
Born in Italy in 1974, I’m an Image Maker working with photography and video. After graduating in Philosophy in 1998, I attended a Master Degree in Business Ethics and worked for more than a decade in Banca Etica’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Department. At the same time I continued practicing photography. Mainly self-taught, I also attended several workshops to develop my technique and art. Along with other fundamental changes that occurred in my personal life, in 2014 I decided to resign and devote myself to Visual Art. In the years 2014-2016 I attended the Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art & Photography at Fondazione Fotografia in Modena. In 2016 I attended the Royal College of Art as exchange student. I live and work in Padova.
