I have been using my own image in my artworks since 2000. I started with usurping film roles, like the character of Mr. Thornhill in Hitchock’s North by Northwest. I then “re-enact” all the selected roles in front of a green screen and use a computer to insert my own head into these roles. In photographs, my intention is to create a psychological discourse between protagonists and location, overcoming the stereotypes and constructing new meanings. I do not use Chroma Key or collage techniques to manipulate the pictures, I just shoot myself and afterwards I multiply my picture in postproduction. Behind every photograph, there is a narrative hidden, which comes to surface unexpectedly. The multiplication of myself through the image is sometimes accompanied by an uncanny feeling, or surprise, but mostly results in a hidden humour.
The ladder connects us and also separates us. Depending on the position of it, and on how much we want to be dependent on it. I like “the ladder scene” from the comedy movies of Stan and Ollie.
