World Passport, 2009

This work provides an image of the contemporary geopolitical map of the world. I collected passports from all over the world and I put their covers in one document, the “NotBook”. Is it passport that gives an identity to man? Or is it man that gives an identity to passport? In any case, this document exists for a reason!

It exists for organising and rearranging: for opening doors and creating borders, for establishing relationships between countries and dispersing the human value of each individual among different people. This contradiction is, in my opinion, the real question, the necessity of politics and human nature.

I find myself between different identities: I am Moroccan, I come from a Muslim culture, and I am carrying out my artistic practice in a European country. It is starting from these conflicting identities that I wonder about the meanings of art. In this perspective, art can be regarded not as a product, but as a process, a daily practice that, through successive stages, becomes an art expression. I consider this art expression from the perspective of a nomadic identity (focusing on materials, their use, their place of production and modes of exhibition), as the representation of the daily life of a geographical area in relation to others, with the aim of giving a true picture of the diversity of human relationships, determined by a variety of religious, traditional, political and cultural factors.
