I decided to answer to “What comes first” with the editing process. This is the first step when you are working on a book. All photos are from my last trip to New York in November 2021. All the tools used in the creative process are a part of my essentials: a black Sharpie, masking tape and a notebook. Masking tape has the advantage of being easy to peel off and makes it easy to move photos, change the order or eliminate them, sometimes more easily than with a software. Lovely Days is in a way, the first version of my upcoming book, allowing me to make choices of assemblies, recreate a chronological order and have a physical and narrative overview.

Matteo Verzini is an Italian photographer and publisher based in Paris. After graduating from a film school, he started his work through snapshot photography, documenting his travels and friends in real-life situations. Due to his passion and obsession with books and DIY culture, he co-founded 1991, a creative studio focused on publishing up-and-coming artists.
