Notebook concept

This artwork is formed by 2 notebooks glued together. The first one collects pictures from the previous AtWork Workshop that took place in Dakar in 2012 and hides a barely smoked cigarette encrusted into the pages. In the second notebook the artist explains the presence of the cigarette as a metaphor of life because exactly as the cigarette burns until it extinguish itself so the life is consumed slowly. Then the author starts a dissertation about life in general, dwelling on personal perspectives that define his identity. As many other students, the artist appears at the same time intrigued and scared by the leaders of the Ivorian civil war. He thinks that Ivory Coast is living an “impasse” made by war and pollution, from which it seems impossible to get out. His identity is developing in this complex background. The artist emphasizes the importance of media and communication to spread knowledge and freedom and declares his will to become part of the cinema industry making his own movies. There are also religious references starting by the cover where the inscriptions “Bible” and “gospel of john chapter 5, v.24” are placed.

(the concept’s text is by Raffaella Carillo)
