Am not an Artist, am Kagimu

Who is “Kagimu”? This notebook portrays my struggle, my journey, the dreams I wanted to achieve in
life. My childhood, things I thought I would have become when I have grown up, but because I had that fear, limited myself and thought about what will people say, what will they think, but now all that is in my past. This is who I am.

Artist statement

Joshua Kagimu’s work reflects on his experience of the education system in Uganda, which he addresses through paintings, performance, video and installation. His work explores themes of time wasting, the burden of expectation and pressure from parents and teachers. A key part of his work is re-presenting his old text books and re-performing lessons thus allowing the audience to make their own conclusions about the syllabuses used in Ugandan Education.
